Senior Advisor
Ministry of Interior; Senior Member
Haqqani Network
Mohammad Anas Haqqani is the youngest among eight siblings of Khalifa Sirajuddin Haqqani, the leader of the Haqqani Network and the current interior minister in the Taliban's government. In addition to serving as a senior advisor to his brother, he holds a position in the Taliban's commission responsible for enforcing the general amnesty announced by the group's emir. In 2014, he was detained in Bahrain while returning from Qatar, subsequently rerouted to Qatar, and later extradited via Dubai to Afghanistan. He was held for over five years in the Bagram detention facility. With the initiation of U.S.-Taliban negotiations under the Trump administration, Anas Haqqani was released in November 2019, along with two other senior Haqqani Network leaders, Haji Mali Khan and Qari Abdul Rashid Omari. The release, serving as a confidence-building measure between the two sides, was part of an exchange agreement for two American University of Afghanistan professors held by the Haqqani Network since 2016. Following his release, Anas Haqqani became the youngest member of the Taliban's negotiating team in Doha, Qatar. Born on March 25, 1995, he writes poetry and maintains an active presence on social media.
