Mujib-ur-Rahman Omar, also recognized as Engineer Mujib-ur-Rahman, currently serves as the Deputy Minister of Energy and Water in the Taliban's government. He was educated as a civil engineer at Nangarhar University. As a student, he joined the Taliban at the age of 16 and served in various provinces, including Wardak, Ghazni, Nangarhar, Kunar, Paktika, and Logar. He was captured in a night raid conducted by the U.S./Afghan forces during the previous government and spent eight years in Bagram prison. During his imprisonment, he engaged in poetry and memorized the Quran, earning the title of “Hafiz.” While at Bagram, he befriended Anas Haqqani, a high-profile member of the Haqqani Network, with whom he communicated through secret letters, often hidden in apples. In late 2020, Mujib-ur-Rahman Omar was among the 5,000 prisoners released as part of the U.S.-Taliban Doha agreement. Alongside his official role in the Ministry of Energy and Water, he operates an orphanage center in his home province.
