Mohammad Mobeen Khan, commonly known as 'General Mobeen,' is a Taliban-affiliated commentator and social media activist. He briefly served as a roving spokesperson for the Kabul Police headquarters following the Taliban's takeover in August 2021. Notably, General Mobeen Khan, who does not hold a military rank earned through professional police or military service, assumed the title of "General" after a live audience supposedly conferred it upon him during a televised event.
Educated in a madrassa in Kabul during the mid-1990s, he joined the Taliban ranks in 1998 as a foot soldier in Ghorband District, Parwan province. His father, Mawlawi Mohammad Amin (a.ka. Agha Lala — deceased), reportedly served with the Taliban as the Provincial Director of Martyrs and Disabled Affairs for Logar province in the 1990s. Following the 2001 U.S. military campaign, Mobeen Khan allegedly distanced himself from the Taliban, and by 2010, operated a shoe shop in downtown Kabul. During this time, he supported his brother, who had enlisted with the Taliban in 2002.
Currently, Mobeen Khan is one of the prominent Taliban faces who actively engages in social media and regularly participates in televised debates and virtual discussions, including on X Spaces and TikTok. He also maintains strong channels of communication with Afghan diaspora communities outside Afghanistan, reportedly using these connections for fundraising efforts, allegedly to support humanitarian causes in the country.
