Mawlawi Arifullah Aref has held the position of Deputy Minister of Finance and Administration at the Ministry of Hajj (Pilgrimage) and Religious Affairs since August 2022. Prior to his current role, he served as Deputy Minister of Energy and Water. In the 1990s, his extensive responsibilities under the Taliban's regime included serving as Deputy Minister of Finance as well as provincial governor of Ghazni and Paktia provinces. He is listed on the UN's sanctions list under the designation TAi.030.
