Mawlawi Shamsuddin Shariati took on the role of Director General of the General Directorate of Supervision and Implementation of Leadership Decrees and Orders in January 2022, a position formerly known as the Attorney General. Before his current appointment, Shamsuddin Shariati served as the deputy minister of agriculture, irrigation, and livestock. During the 1990s, he held the position of governor of Wardak province under the Taliban's rule. In July 2022, a new law decreed by the Taliban's emir, Mullah Haibatullah Akhundzada, abolished the Office of the Attorney General (Loi Saranawali), replacing it with the General Directorate of Supervision and Implementation of Leadership Decrees and Orders. This change effectively transferred the responsibility of investigating and prosecuting legal and criminal cases to the courts and the Taliban's security and intelligence bodies. The law consolidated the Taliban emir's power to oversee, review, and ensure the implementation of all laws, decrees, rules, and regulations, granting him the authority to reject any ruling or decision made at the ministerial level, while also ensuring automatic endorsement of anything approved by him. Born in 1968, Shamsuddin Shariati is sanctioned by the UN Security Council under the designation TAi.103.
