Mullah Abdul Razzaq Akhund, also known as Lala Akhund, was appointed as the Deputy Commander of the 207 Al-Farooq Military Corps headquartered in Herat province in January 2024. Prior to taking up this position, he served as the Chief of Staff of the same military corps since March 2022. Before his military roles, he held the position of Deputy Minister of Martyrs and Disabled Affairs based in Kabul. A prominent figure within the Taliban, he was reportedly a close confidante of the Taliban's founding leader, Mullah Mohammad Omar. His extensive background includes serving as the Chief of Police in Kabul province during the Taliban's rule in the 1990s, followed by a brief tenure as the Minister of Interior. Born in 1958, several reports point to his involvement in drug trafficking. He is reportedly listed on the UN's sanctions list under the designation TAi.053.
