Mullah Mohammad Abbas Akhund, one of the 30 founding members of the Taliban, served as the Minister of State for National Disaster Management in the Taliban government until early July 2024. A staunch supporter of the Taliban cause, he was a trusted confidante of the Taliban's founder, Mullah Mohammad Omar. During the Taliban's rule in the 1990s, he held key positions as minister of public health, attorney general, and mayor of Kandahar province. Following the fall of the Taliban regime in 2001, Mullah Abbas Akhund continued his service to the Taliban cause by leading the Taliban’s health commission. Reports suggest that he was responsible for overseeing medical centers dedicated to caring for the Taliban's wounded fighters. In this capacity, he reportedly collaborated with UN agencies and was believed to have benefited from aid programs. During the Afghan resistance against the Soviets, he was a member of the Harakat-i-Inqilab-i-Islami jihadist party led by Mawlawi Mohammad Nabi Mohammadi. Mullah Abbas Akhund is listed on the UN sanctions list under the designation TAi.066.
