Mullah Mohammad Yaqoob Mujahid is the eldest son of Mullah Mohammad Omar, the founding leader of the Taliban, who has previously served as a key member of the Taliban’s Quetta Shura. Known to his peers in the Taliban ranks as 'Zwan Mawlawi Saheb,' or the young mullah, Yaqoob has held important roles within the Taliban leadership from 2016 to 2021. This includes his previous role as one of the Taliban's two deputy emirs in which he served alongside Khalifa Sirajuddin Haqqani, where he oversaw the Taliban’s military activities in 15 provinces. Additionally, he has served as the chief of the Taliban's military commission until the group's takeover in August 2021. As of June 2023, Mullah Yaqoob is reportedly 31-year-old, married, and has five kids. He has not received any formal education, and despite his important current portfolio, he is not listed on the United Nations or other sanctions list.
